What Size Am I?

Sizing is more than a shoe size

Step Flex orthotics are produced in a wide range of lengths and widths. We select your orthotics to match the length and width of your feet as well as bone structure, not simply the shoe size you normally wear.

Your Step Flex size can vary from your shoe size by as much as three sizes either way, which is why careful sizing is important.

Our preferred method combines a footprint with a physical check of the orthotic against your foot to determine the correct position and fit. Step Flex staff and distributors are experienced in this process, and many of our medical distributors are also trained in Step Flex sizing.

For this reason, the best way to be sized is with a personal fitting at a show or by appointment.

What happens at a fitting?

Feet come in a wide range of lengths and widths, so our task is to determine the right combination for the bone structure of each foot.

We take your footprints

During your fitting, we take an ink impression of both feet on paper. We do not apply ink to your feet or socks.

The print is darker where there is more pressure and lighter where there is less. We use the impression to help assess the length and width of your feet and select the most appropriate Step Flex orthotics.

Your footprints can also reveal patterns that may correlate with aches and pains associated with foot misalignment. These patterns do not determine your orthotic size, but they can help explain why you may be experiencing certain problems.

You can keep your footprints as a reference, whether you decide to purchase Step Flex or not.

We check the fit and you take a test walk

We place the selected orthotics against your feet to check that the length, width and positioning are appropriate for you.

We then place the orthotics in your shoes so you can take a short test walk and experience exactly how Step Flex feels before deciding to purchase.

Step Flex is designed to encourage changes in the way your feet function over time, which is why selecting the correct size and following the gradual wearing-in process are both important.

Support if you need it

A small number of people — around 4% — do not settle comfortably into their orthotics straight away.

In many cases, we can help once we understand what is happening. If you need a size change, we can make it free of charge within two months of purchase, excluding any postage costs on your end.

We provide these additional services and warranties at no extra charge when you purchase from a Step Flex office, a Step Flex stand at a public show, or many of our medical distributors.

Medical Distributors (doctors and therapists) are not required to offer all of these services, so we recommend asking what support is included before purchasing.
